Homes With Soul celebrates the diversity of Australians renting with pets, whether it’s young couples, divorced parents or single professionals, they all share something in common – the desire to provide a secure, loving home for their pets. It’s always great to hear other people’s stories, but it’s even better when it involves their four-legged friends!
Anthony, 48, Adelaide SA, Hudson, 4, Saint Bernard
Five years ago, my partner and I started looking for our first rental property. We’re a same-sex couple and had also decided we were ready to bring a dog into our little family. We were over the moon when we found an apartment in Adelaide which allowed pets. Before long, our Saint Bernard, Hudson, joined our home.
We love having Hudson with us – he is part of our family. My health isn’t great at times and having him around is so comforting to me. Also, Adelaide has been experiencing a rise in crime recently and Hudson just helps me feel safe. He has brought so much happiness into our lives and we would never give him up. We’ve built a great relationship with our landlord and look forward to creating many more happy memories here with Hudson for years to come.
Alvina & Jerry, 40’s, Ashbury NSW
We’re a couple in our 40’s and have a family of three dogs and a cat. A few years ago, we we’re looking for a new pet-friendly rental property and found an agent who was happy to pass our request onto the landlord. We agreed to have the property fumigated and professional cleaned at the end of our lease, and before we knew it, we were moving into our new home!
As a couple with no children and no plans to ever go down that path, having our fur-kids greet us at the door is a treat we treasure every day. They bring so many smiles to our faces and caring for them brings us so much fulfillment. We hope to stay in our rental property for as long as possible to avoid taking our fur-kids away from the home they feel safe and familiar with. They are our family, and we feel so blessed to be able to cherish every day with them.
Sarah, 27, Curl Curl NSW, Seb, 7, Jack Russell Terrier X
I moved into a share rental house with a large backyard because I wanted a good life for my dog. While I have thought about getting my own place in the future, there just seems to be too much competition for pet-friendly rental properties in Sydney.
Living in a share house certainly has its moments, but generally I find we all get along brilliantly. I’m a responsible pet-owner, I walk Seb twice a day, I take him into work with me twice a week and there’s never been any complaints from the neighbours about barking or damage. If we ever did try to apply for our own rental property, there’s no doubt we’d be the perfect example of a tenant with pets.
My dog is my life and his happiness and comfort always comes before mine. Most people have to wait until they own a home to get a pet, but in this property market who knows how long that might take? I certainly wasn’t willing to wait until my mid-thirties to adopt a dog. Having him in my life makes me so happy and spending time with him is the best part of my day.
